cis-4-Octene is a cycloaddition product of two molecules. cis-4-Octene has been synthesized by the ring-opening metathesis polymerization process of cyclopentene oxide with an alkyne monomer. The product was found to have sequence specificity and conformational properties that are different than those of its trans counterpart. cis-4-Octene can be used as a precursor in organic synthesis, specifically in metathesis reactions, which are reversible reactions that produce new chemical bonds through the exchange of metal ions. The reaction mechanism for this type of reaction is not yet fully understood but it is thought to involve the formation of a coordination complex between the reactants. Kinetic data for the reaction have been obtained and suggest that cis-4-Octene reacts faster than trans-4-octene with methyl acrylate.
