Desmethyl erlotinib is a drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. It is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and other cancers. This drug binds to epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) and blocks their activation. Desmethyl erlotinib has been shown to have an effect on diabetic patients, who have an increased risk for developing cancer. The effectiveness of this drug has been demonstrated in Sprague-Dawley rats, which are often used as models for human response to drugs. This drug also interacts with human liver tissue in a similar manner as it does with rat liver tissue. Desmethyl erlotinib has been shown to be effective against human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expressing breast cancers in vitro and in vivo.
