Product Information

Name:
Oxcarbazepine N-sulfate
Synonyms:
  • N-[(10,11-Dihydro-10-oxo-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepin-5-yl)carbonyl]sulfamic acid
Description:

Oxcarbazepine is a drug that is used to treat neurological disorders such as epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and bipolar disorder. Oxcarbazepine is structurally related to carbamazepine and has similar mechanisms of action. It binds to the same site on voltage-sensitive sodium channels as phenytoin and carbamazepine but with higher affinity. This binding prevents the influx of sodium ions into nerve cells, which leads to an increase in the duration of action potentials. Oxcarbazepine has been shown to be effective against benzodiazepines-induced seizures in animal models. The mechanism for this activity is not known although it may involve inhibition of GABA transaminase by oxcarbazepine metabolites.
