17-Oxo betamethasone is a metabolite of prednisolone and is formed by the activation of prednisolone by 17-hydroxylase. It has been postulated that this metabolite may be involved in the regulation of hormone synthesis. This compound is not known to have any biological function, but it can be found in wastewater. Activated 17-oxo betamethasone has been shown to have an aerobic biodegradability of 0.6% per day and an environmental half-life of 3 days. The main reaction route for activated 17-oxo betamethasone is through hydrolysis, which results in the formation of inactive metabolites such as methylprednisolone and 5β-dihydroxy-17α,20α-[(1S)-1,2,3]trihydroxytestosterone.
