3-Oxoindan-4-carboxylic acid is a metabolite of many drugs such as sulphonamides, phenylbutazone, diethyldithiocarbamate and phenylhydrazine. It has been found to be an anaphylactic agent in rats and also inhibits the release of histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells. The rate of elimination depends on the route of administration and is dependent on the kinetic constants for each drug. 3-Oxoindan-4-carboxylic acid is excreted through the kidney unchanged or as metabolites that are conjugated with sulphates.
