- Octa-1,7-Diyne
- Octadiyne
1,7-Octadiyne is a new antifungal agent that can be synthesized from commercially available chemicals. It has been shown to have activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger in the presence of chloride ions. 1,7-Octadiyne binds to the surface of fungal cells and inhibits the enzyme glycogen synthase by preventing the transfer of glucose to glycogen. The compound also has potential applications as a sealant for metal surfaces and an additive in potassium phosphate solutions. The ruthenium complex is used as a catalyst for olefin metathesis reactions, which are related to polymerization reactions. 1,7-Octadiyne also has functional groups that can bind with silicon atoms on glass surfaces, which may lead to its use as an activator for flow systems. This molecule also shows potential as an antidepressant because it may inhibit monoamine neurotransmitter release via inhibition of phosphodiesterase enzymes.
