2-Octen-4-one is an electrophilic compound that is used in the synthesis of β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. The reactivity of 2-octen-4-one can be tuned by changing the substituents on the carbonyl group. In this way, it can be used as a nucleophile and as a protonation agent. 2-Octen-4-one is also able to form amine bonds with other molecules, which makes it an interesting biomolecular probe for studying protein structure and function.
