1,8-Octanedithiol is a molecule that belongs to the class of 1,4-dithiacyclohexanes. It has been shown to form monolayers on metal surfaces and form disulfide bonds with butyric acid. The photooxidation of 1,8-octanedithiol can be inhibited by diphenyl ethers or by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This compound is also soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, and acetone. It crystallizes in the form of needles or prisms and its transport properties are enhanced when it is dissolved in water. The optical properties of 1,8-octanedithiol are red in color and it has surface-enhanced Raman scattering properties.
