L-Ornithine methyl ester dihydrochloride is a hydrophobic compound that has been shown to inhibit enzymes. It is a spontaneous reaction product of L-ornithine hydrochloride and methanol. The fluorescent properties of this compound may be attributed to the presence of the hydroxyl group. This reaction is immobilized by flocculation with hydroxides, which can be removed by washing with acetonitrile. L-Ornithine methyl ester dihydrochloride has been used as an anion ligand for chromatography in order to regulate the pH of the system. This compound has also been shown to regulate l-glutamine, which is necessary for protein synthesis.
