Oxazole-5-carboxylic acid is a copper complex that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enzyme and preventing the formation of the activated form. The inhibition of the activated form of PCR enzyme reduces the production of RNA and DNA in cells. This compound has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in rat liver cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit activation of cyclase. Oxazole-5-carboxylic acid also has a vasodilatory effect, which is thought to be caused by its effects on potassium channels. This drug has been shown to stimulate light emission from mouse retinal cells when calcium levels are at physiological levels, but not when calcium levels are increased or decreased.
