5-oxo-5-phenylpentanoic acid is an asymmetric synthesis of the 5-oxopentanoic acid. It is a hypervalent molecule that possesses an acceptor and acetylation group. The molecule has been shown to inhibit cell growth in hCT116 cells by inhibiting the cell cycle at G2/M phase, thereby arresting the progression of cancer cells. This molecule also interferes with energy metabolism and induces apoptosis in human cancer cells. 5-oxo-5-phenylpentanoic acid inhibits butyric acid transport, which may be due to its methylation of the phenyl ring, preventing the butyric acid from binding to its receptor.
