N-b-Oxo-octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone is a bacterial signal molecule that regulates the production of fatty acids. It is used as a chemical in the treatment of alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease. N-b-Oxo-octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone has been shown to have potent antagonistic effects against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy, and malaria. This compound also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their DNA and stopping its synthesis. N-b-Oxo-octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone is synthesized from L-homoserine lactone, which is produced by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa when it senses the presence of another bacterium or a plant root cell.
