Octadecylcyclohexane is a polycarboxylic acid that can activate electrons to form hydrogen atoms. It has been shown to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by binding to its RNA polymerase and blocking transcription. Octadecylcyclohexane also has antiviral activity against hepatitis C virus, which is due to its ability to inhibit the production of viral ribonucleic acid (RNA). The exothermic reaction that occurs when octadecylcyclohexane reacts with ethane is used in the manufacture of polyurethanes.
