Octafluorotoluene (OFT) is a chemical that is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and other fluorochemicals. It has been shown to react with nucleophilic compounds, such as fatty acids, to form trifluoroacetate esters. OFT has also been shown to undergo a phase transition from liquid to gas at -41°C. The kinetic energy of OFT is high enough for it to react with hydrogen fluoride and form hydrofluoric acid. This reaction occurs spontaneously without any need for activation energy. OFT reacts with hydroxyl groups on fatty acids to form cyclopentene oxide, which can then undergo chain reactions. These reactions are exothermic and produce reactive oxygen species such as superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide, which may contribute to the toxic effects of OFT in humans.
