Octafluoro-1,4-diiodobutane is a compound that belongs to the general class of benzyl halides. It was synthesized by reacting chlorotrimethylsilane with octafluoropentene and bubbling through anhydrous hydrogen chloride gas. The reaction yields a crystalline solid in which the molecules are arranged in a hexagonal pattern. Octafluoro-1,4-diiodobutane has been shown to be an effective drug for the treatment of diphenyl ether poisoning. This molecule can be used as a fluorinating agent for the synthesis of other compounds.
A molecular structure of octafluoro-1,4-diiodobutane has been determined in x-ray diffraction experiments and by titration calorimetry.
