Oxysparteine is a plant alkaloid with a chemical structure that contains two nitrogen atoms and a hydrochloric acid. This compound has the ability to react with other compounds to form an acid complex, which is taken up by plants. The uptake of oxysparteine can be increased by adding trifluoroacetic acid or hydrogen bond. Oxysparteine belongs to the genus Dioscorea and its quinolizidine alkaloids are responsible for its physiological effects. In cell culture, oxysparteine has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis and decrease the level of DNA synthesis.
