Orcinol Gentiobioside is an acetate extract of the genus Gentianaceae. It has been demonstrated to be a neuroprotective agent in animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Orcinol Gentiobioside may also have other properties, including spermatozoa motility and male fertility, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The chemical structure of orcinol gentiobiosides consists of a tricyclic ring system with two hydroxyl groups on the propane ring and one on the butane ring. The diastereomeric purity of orcinol gentiobiosides was determined by mass spectrometric techniques. The technique used in this study was electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-QTOFMS) which can provide accurate structural information for complex mixtures such as this compound.
