2-Phenylhydroquinone is a chemical that is used in the synthesis of sodium salts. It can be produced by the oxidation of phenol with sodium nitrate and sulfuric acid, or by the reaction of hydroquinone and benzene. 2-Phenylhydroquinone has been shown to react with DNA and cause oxidative injury to cells. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied using a model system consisting of 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, nuclear DNA, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. 2-Phenylhydroquinone reacts with the nucleobases on DNA through ester linkages. This chemical possesses conformational properties that are typical of group P2 molecules such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data.
