Pivaloylacetonitrile is a chemical that possesses an active methylene group. It is the reaction product of pivalic acid and acetonitrile. Pivaloylacetonitrile can be used to synthesize tetronic acid, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in wild-type mice and cell culture. Tetronic acid has been shown to inhibit the activity of cb2 cannabinoid receptor, which may provide a new therapeutic target for inflammatory diseases and cancer. Tetronic acid binds to these receptors with high affinity and inhibits the activation of p38 kinase, leading to inhibition of cb2 receptor function.
