Phenethyl isocyanate (PEIC) is an organic compound that is used in the preparation of pharmaceuticals. It is also a molecule with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunosuppressive, and anti-tumor properties. Phenethyl isocyanate binds to the CCR5 receptor, which inhibits HIV binding and entry into the body's cells. PEIC has been shown to reduce inflammation in rats with bowel disease and improve symptoms of cancer. The low light conditions under which PEIC was synthesized are thought to be important for its activity against cancer cells because it prevents UV irradiation from degrading the molecule.
