N-Propyl isothiocyanate belongs to the group of activated compounds and is used as a health care product. It has been found to be cytotoxic against cancer cells in vitro. N-Propyl isothiocyanate has also been shown to inhibit the growth of melanoma cells by interfering with cell cycle progression and inducing apoptosis. N-Propyl isothiocyanate may act by binding to proteins or DNA, inhibiting enzyme activities and causing hydroxylation of the cell membrane, which results in decreased proliferation. The matrix effect may also contribute to its cytotoxicity by preventing nutrients from entering cells.
