2-(Perfluorohexyl)ethyl methacrylate (2-PFEMA) is a polymer that is synthesized by free-radical polymerization of 2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl methacrylate. It has been shown to be a useful material for dental and orthodontic applications due to its ability to resist mineralization. 2-PFEMA is chemically stable, exhibits no photoelectron emission, and has a low toxicity in animals. This polymer can be used as a coating for medical devices or as a degradable implant that slowly biodegrades over time, eliminating the need for extraction. The molecular modeling of this material has revealed that it contains functional groups such as carbonate and fluorine. FTIR spectroscopy indicates the presence of ester bonds in this polymer.
