1,1'-(1,4-Phenylene)bis(2-phenylethane-1,2-dione) is a methoxylated polyester that undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of water. It is used as a monomer for preparing methoxy polyesters and has been studied extensively as a polymer for use in photovoltaic devices. 1,1'-(1,4-Phenylene)bis(2-phenylethane-1,2-dione) is also used to prepare peroxides and other organic compounds that are important to synthetic chemistry. It has been shown to produce photocurrent when irradiated with light and can be used as a precursor for methyl alcohol synthesis.
