1-Phenyladamantane is an antidepressant drug that acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It is used to treat depression and other mood disorders. 1-Phenyladamantane has also been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit sphingosine kinase and increase levels of cyclic AMP. The mechanism of action for this drug involves the inhibition of the enzyme sphingosine kinase, which converts sphingosine into sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). The S1P pathway plays a role in cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. 1-Phenyladamantane inhibits cell proliferation by binding to the hydroxyl group on the phosphodiester bond on S1P and preventing S1P from binding to its receptor at the surface of cells.
