1-(2-Phenylethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione is a synthetic compound that has been used as a substrate molecule to study intramolecular hydrogen transfer reactions. This compound also reacts with Wittig reagents to form long chain polymers. The wittig mediated reaction is an effective method for polymerizing 1-(2-phenylethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione and yields higher molecular weight homopolymers than the termination or transfer methods. The methyl groups on the phenyl ring of the molecule can be removed by MALDI TOF mass spectrometry to give information about the molecular weight of the polymer. This chemical is not used in any commercial products at this time.
