- 2,3-Dioxopiperazine
- 2,3-Piperazinedione
Piperazine-2,3-dione belongs to the piperazinedione class of compounds and is used as a pharmaceutical. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the phospholipid membrane and changing its structure. This leads to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell division. Piperazine-2,3-dione has been shown to have an effect on cancer cells in vitro. It has also been shown that this compound reacts with hydrochloric acid, forming a nitrilium ion that can react with oxygen in the air to form nitrogen oxides. These nitrogen oxides are cytotoxic and may cause lung damage.
