N-Propylaniline is a polycarboxylic acid that has the ability to dissolve solutes. It is synthesized by reacting propylene with formaldehyde. The reaction mechanism of N-propylaniline involves the formation of a dimethyl fumarate intermediate and then the addition of hydroxyl group to produce an acetal. The kinetic energy of the reactants determines whether or not this reaction will take place. This compound has a phase transition temperature at -34 degrees Celsius, which is below room temperature. Exposure to light can cause polymerization in this compound, which could be a concern if it is being used as a coating on food packaging. In some cases, N-propylaniline can act as a receptor agonist and can bind to receptors found in cells, leading to increased production of certain substances such as amines.
