1-Phenylcyclobutanecarbonitrile (1PCB) is a synthetic antioxidant that has been shown to scavenge radicals, including hydroxyl, peroxyl, and alkoxyl radicals. 1PCB also exhibits synergistic effects when combined with naringin and tangeretin. It has been found to be a potent inhibitor of lipid peroxidation in cell cultures. Furthermore, 1PCB displays an antioxidant activity comparable to ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol. It has been shown to inhibit the oxidation of carbohydrates in vitro and in vivo by scavenging reactive oxygen species such as furfural and hydroxyl radicals.
