L-Pinitol is a plant sugar alcohol that is found in many plants, including corn and soybeans. L-Pinitol has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase, which converts GABA to succinic semialdehyde. It also increased the production of methyl transferase, an enzyme involved in the metabolism of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. In vitro assays show that L-pinitol can protect liver tissue from oxidative damage induced by quinolizidine alkaloids and inhibit photosynthetic activity in plants. L-Pinitol has been shown to have hepatoprotective effects in mice when given orally at doses between 50 and 500 mg/kg body weight per day for five days. L-Pinitol also stimulates the flow system by increasing redox potential levels.
