1-Phenylpiperidin-4-one is a synthetic molecule that is used as an antiviral drug. It is a prodrug that is metabolized to the active form, piperidone. The antiviral properties of 1-phenylpiperidin-4-one have been shown in vivo and in vitro against viruses such as HIV, influenza A virus, and herpes simplex virus type I. 1-Phenylpiperidin-4-one has been shown to inhibit viral replication by binding to the viral nucleic acid with high affinity and blocking its synthesis. This molecule also prevents the release of progeny virions from infected cells.
