4-Phenylpicolinic acid is an antibacterial agent that inhibits the biosynthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to the sulfonated 4-aminobenzoic acid in the peptidoglycan, inhibiting its crosslinking with other amino acids and preventing the formation of a stable bond. This drug has shown anticancer activity by causing DNA damage and inhibiting cancer cells from dividing. 4-Phenylpicolinic acid also has functioned as a competitive inhibitor of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
