Potassium cyanide is a poisonous compound that inhibits mitochondrial function by binding to the iron atom of cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the electron transport chain. It also binds to DNA polymerase and prevents transcription and replication. Potassium cyanide has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The inhibition of energy metabolism may also contribute to its toxic effects on cells. Potassium cyanide has been shown to inhibit cell growth in culture through x-ray diffraction data, enzyme activities, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), mitochondrial functions, phase transition temperature and potassium concentrations. The Michaelis-Menten kinetics have been used as an analytical method for determining the concentration of potassium cyanide that is required for bacterial growth inhibition. A wild-type strain was used as a model system for this study.
