2-Piperidin-1-yl-benzaldehyde is an electrophilic aldehyde that can be used as a ligand in asymmetric synthesis. It is also a chiral molecule with two possible structures, which are enantiomers. 2-Piperidin-1-yl-benzaldehyde could be synthesized by ring opening of the corresponding 2,4,6-trichlorobenzoyl chloride with piperidine in the presence of sodium methoxide in methanol. The resulting product was then purified by recrystallisation from dichloromethane and toluene. 2-Piperidin-1-yl-benzaldehyde is also useful for crystallographic studies because it has a mononuclear ancillary ligand system and its geometry can be systematically varied.
