1-Phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2(3H)-one (1,4-dihydrobenzimidazole) is an aromatic compound that can be obtained by the pyrolysis of benzene, benzene and ethanol, or by the reaction of aniline with nitric acid. 1,4-Dihydrobenzimidazole is a symmetric molecule with two identical phenazine substituents on opposite sides of the ring. The carbanilide group in 1,4-dihydrobenzimidazole is a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. It binds to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes which are required for bacterial replication and transcription. 1,4-Dihydrobenzimidazole also has been shown to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex
