It is also used as a catalyst for organic reactions and has been shown to catalyze the reaction between cyclohexane and phenol. 2H-Pyran-3(6H)-one was originally isolated from Streptococcus bacteria but can also be found in nature in plants such as pyracantha. The molecule has a cyclohexane ring with an attached hydroxyl group, which is responsible for its antibacterial activity.
