B-Phenylcinnamonitrile is a compound that has been studied for its ability to remove anions from wastewater. It has been shown to have a high efficiency in removing nitrate, sulfate, and arsenate ions. The removal of these anions is accomplished through the use of electron transfer reactions with acrylonitrile as the electron donor and the anion as the electron acceptor. The reaction mechanism of this process involves protonation of the anion by b-phenylcinnamonitrile followed by reaction with electron spin resonance (ESR) active acrylonitrile. This process results in a cinnamaldehyde product, which can then be recycled back into b-phenylcinnamonitrile through hydrogenation or hydrolysis reactions.
