(2S,4S)-4-Phenylpyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride is an industrial chemical that is synthesized through the hydrogenation of 2-phenylpyrrole-4-carboxylic acid. This chemical is used in the synthesis of hydrocortisone and other corticosteroids. The industrial process requires anhydrous ethanol as a solvent and hydrogen gas as a reactant. Hydrogenation of 2-phenylpyrrole-4-carboxylic acid yields (2S,4S)-4-phenylpyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride and water. The reaction can be conducted at room temperature with a catalyst such as palladium on carbon or platinum oxide.
