Description:
Praziquantel is a drug that belongs to the class of benzimidazoles, which are used as anthelmintics. Praziquantel is active against tapeworms such as Diphyllobothrium latum and Taenia saginata. Praziquantel is also used for the treatment of schistosomiasis and cysticercosis, caused by Schistosoma mansoni and Taenia solium respectively. The drug inhibits the function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thereby blocking nerve impulses in muscles and causing paralysis. The enantiomers of praziquantel are (S)-(-)-praziquantel and (R)-(+)-praziquantel.
