The butyric acid is a reactive chemical species that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It has been shown to be an effective reactant in the polymerization reaction. The butyric acid reacts with di-n-butyltin dichloride and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid to form poly(butyl acrylate). This product has a high degree of polymerization and a low glass transition temperature. Butyric acid also reacts with bromine to form poly(brominated butyl acrylate) which has increased solubility properties, improved mechanical properties and enhanced resistance to heat degradation.
