- 4-Thioxo-1,4-Dihydropyridine-3-Sulfonamide
3-Pyridinesulfonamide,4-mercapto- is a cytosolic inhibitor of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme. It has been shown to inhibit all isoforms of the enzyme. The drug is clinically available in Japan, and is used for the treatment of glaucoma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 3-Pyridinesulfonamide,4-mercapto- inhibits both human carbonic anhydrase I and II. It also inhibits other enzymes that are targets for sulfonamides such as erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase and lactate dehydrogenase. This drug shows significant inhibitory activity against carbonic anhydrase, and may be useful in treating conditions such as glaucoma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease where there is excess production of fluid by the eye or lung respectively.
