Potassium iodate is a salt that has a high solubility in water. It is used as an oxidizing agent and disinfectant, and it can also be used to induce oxidative stress in cells. The optimum concentration of potassium iodate for the oxidation of organic substances is between 0.5-1%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies have shown that the reaction mechanism of potassium iodate with organic substances involves a dinucleotide phosphate (NADH) as the electron donor and a complex enzyme (NADPH) as the electron acceptor. This reaction leads to an increase in redox potentials, which are electron potentials that indicate how readily electrons are available for biochemical reactions. Potassium iodate has been found to be non-toxic when used at concentrations below its optimum level. Toxicity studies have shown that potassium iodate has no effect on nutrient solutions or model systems such as sodium citrate or potassium dichromate.
