Description

4-Phenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridine (PTTC) is a bicyclic heterocycle that is metabolized in the body to 4-(1-hydroxyethyl)thieno[3,2-c]pyridine. It has been used as an anticonvulsant and an inhibitor of nerve necrosis. PTTC blocks nerve impulses by inhibiting the uptake of sodium into nerve cells and by blocking the release of neurotransmitters from nerve endings. It also prevents necrosis of nerve cells by blocking the release of excitatory amino acids such as glutamate. The elimination reaction occurs mainly through oxidation or hydrolysis.
