Propioamidine hydrochloride is an inhibitor of the enzyme lp-pla2 that is structurally related to serotonin. It has been shown to have inhibitory effects on virus replication and cytotoxic activity against tumour cells, as well as an antitumour effect in a mouse model of diabetes. The antiviral activity is due to its ability to inhibit the influenza virus and HIV infection. Propioamidine hydrochloride has been shown to encompass a variety of nitrogen atoms with different structures, including hydrogen chloride, which may be responsible for its antiviral properties.
