4-Pyridin-3-yl-benzoic acid is a ligand that binds to transition metal ions, such as lanthanide. It has been shown to form architectures, including n-oxide, carboxylate and interlinked complexes with these ions. 4-Pyridin-3-yl-benzoic acid can be used to stabilize lanthanide ions in the presence of high temperatures or crystallographic conditions, such as single crystal x-ray diffraction. This ligand usually forms unsymmetrical complexes with transition metal ions. When bound to lanthanides, 4-pyridin-3-yl benzoic acid coordinates through the nitrogen atom at the 3 position on the pyridine ring and through the oxygen atom at the 4 position on the benzoic acid ring.
