4-Pivalamidobutanoic acid is a drug that is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of symptoms of bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. 4-Pivalamidobutanoic acid also has pharmacological properties which include the ability to inhibit gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesis and inhibit the release of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, TNFα, and IL-8. This drug also has an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting prostaglandin production through its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes. The anti-inflammatory effects are due to its hydroxyl group and ester linkages.
