1-Phenyl-cyclopropylamine is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cervical cancer. This drug binds to the benzyl groups of histones, preventing their lysine residues from being acetylated by acetylases. This prevents gene expression, leading to cell death. 1-Phenyl-cyclopropylamine can also be used as a substrate for bacterial enzymes and human liver microsomes, which may lead to its use as a potential probe for the study of enzyme kinetics. The drug is stable in neutral pH environments and denatures at high temperatures.
