Psyllium husk is the outer layer of the seed of the Plantago ovata plant. Psyllium husks contain soluble fiber, which helps to regulate bowel function. Psyllium husks have been shown to lower cholesterol levels, reduce postprandial blood glucose, and help lower insulin resistance in people with diabetes. The optimum concentration of psyllium to achieve these effects has been determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. By adding psyllium to dextran sulfate, a synergic effect on lowering blood sugar was observed in rats. In vitro studies have also demonstrated that psyllium can increase the rate of DNA synthesis and protein production in some cells, but not others. Chemiluminescence methods are often used for determining the level of free fatty acids in plasma or serum as well as for measuring other lipid levels and cardiac effects. Chromatographic analysis can be used to determine the concentration of a drug in plasma or serum following administration
