P,P'-DDD is a chemical compound with primary use as a pesticide. It acts by inhibiting voltage-dependent calcium channels in nerve and muscle cells, which leads to paralysis and death. P,P'-DDD is used to treat congestive heart failure and has been shown to have beneficial effects on atrial fibrillation. The drug has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. P,P'-DDD binds to voltage-dependent calcium channels in the plasma membrane of cardiac muscle cells, blocking the flow of calcium ions into the cell. This blocks the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings and prevents muscle contraction. P,P'-DDD has genotoxic effects that may lead to cancer or mutations in the human body.
