Poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride), cumene terminated (PSMA) is a fluorescent probe that can be used for the measurement of interactions between cationic surfactants and proteins. The fluorescence intensity of PSMA is proportional to the number of protein molecules linked to it. The distribution of PSMA in vivo can be detected by microscopy, and this probe has been shown to be useful in cancer treatments. Hyperthermia has been shown to increase the fluorescence intensity of PSMA when exposed to magnetic nanoparticles, while a reaction time of 1 minute increased the fluorescence intensity by 10%. This probe has also been shown to have hydrodynamic properties and react with gold nanoparticles.
