1-Pyrenesulfonic acid sodium salt is a supramolecular polymer with a functional group that consists of one pyrene molecule attached to the sulfonic acid sodium salt. The 1-pyrenesulfonic acid sodium salt has been shown to be an effective polymerase chain reaction (PCR) model system and can be used for the study of life cycles and techniques. It also has the ability to form microcapsules with protruding structures that are sensitive to pH levels and can act as a model system for hydrogen bonds. This polymer is stable in trimethylammonium chloride, which is commonly found in solvents, but undergoes hydrolysis when exposed to water or alcohols.
